James D. Atkinson, MD

Dr. James D. Atkinson, Bariatric Surgeon James D. Atkinson, MD, FACS is the Medical Director of Surgical Weight Control Center of Nevada. Under his direction and leadership, his center is recognized as the best bariatric program in Nevada and has earned a top 5% ranking in the nation by Health Grades Report. Board-certified and native of Las Vegas, Dr. Atkinson began his professional career at Portland State University where he received his bachelor's degree. He went on to earn his medical degree from University of Nevada. He completed his residency training at the University Medical Center of Las Vegas where he trained in bariatric surgery, trauma surgery, and served chief resident in surgery. He then received specialized training in advanced laparoscopy. Dr. Atkinson is a member of the American Medical Association (AMA), the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS), and the Manatee County Medical Society. Dr. Atkinson's expertise and dedication to bariatric surgery led him to become a valued consultant for Ethicon Endo-Surgery. He has received numerous awards and recognitions including induction into the distinguished medical honor society Alpha Omega Alpha, being featured in MD News and Endoscopic Surgeons (SAGES), and recognized as one of America's Top Surgeons. As a respected leader in the field of bariatric surgery, Dr. Atkinson has mentored more than 100 surgeons from across the nation who seek to learn from surgical expertise and learn about the techniques that he personally developed. In his free time, he enjoys snowmobiles with his family and golf.
