Dr. Matthew Smith
Why I chose to pursue a career in healthcare:
There is no more rewarding career than one in the field of medicine. I am privileged to spend my days helping people make meaningful life decisions with the aim of improving their health and well-being. As a surgeon, I provide treatment in a physical and immediately effective manner. What could be more professionally satisfying? As a bariatric surgeon, I am able to provide operative interventions that positively impact quality of life (and lifespan!) more so than any other surgical subspecialty, bar none. Why would I choose any other career?
What I want my patients to know about me:
I care deeply about the patients in my care. Regardless of whether a surgical option is chosen or not, I will do anything I can to help. I’m also very down-to-earth. Feel free to ask me anything.
What I do when I'm not seeing patients:
I spend my free time with my wife and daughter. I’m a UNC basketball fan. When life permits, my family and I love to travel and to visit extended family.
