According to the Obesity Action Coalition, Alabama ranks sixth in the United States when accounting for the impact of obesity. Over 38% of adults have obesity. Of those adults, over 40% of female Alabamians have obesity. In addition to obesity, approximately 43% of adults have hypertension, and over 15% have diabetes.

In Alabama, most patients use insurance to help cover the cost of their surgery. The largest health insurer in Alabama is Blue Cross Blue Shield, and some of its plans may cover bariatric surgery. Other patients will opt for Medicare or Medicaid to cover their bariatric procedures. For those with high deductibles or no bariatric coverage, speak to your practice to see if there are special cash-pay gastric sleeve or gastric bypass rates.
